This afternoon, at approximately 12h30, Marshall Security received a call from a member of the public who was following a black VW Golf 5 with no number plates. The vehicle had just been involved in an armed robbery in the Sydenham area, where suspects fired shots before fleeing.
Although the caller eventually lost sight of the vehicle, they provided its last known location as it entered the Sea Cow Lake area. Acting on this tip, our Special Operations Team, together with Greenwood Park SAPS Trio Crimes, immediately responded and began searching for the armed suspects. A short while later, the vehicle was spotted at the intersection of Kew Road and Queen Nandi Drive in the Kenville area.
As soon as our team approached, the suspects opened fire on our officers. In self-defense, our officers returned fire. During the exchange, one suspect was fatally wounded and was later declared deceased by paramedics. Two other suspects sustained injuries, were stabilised on the scene, and transported to the hospital under police guard. A fourth suspect was arrested on-site without injury.
Unlicensed firearms were recovered, and Greenwood Park SAPS is on scene conducting further investigations.
We commend our Special Operations Team and the Greenwood Park SAPS Trio Crime Unit for their swift and decisive action in handling this dangerous situation, as well as the vigilant member of the public who provided crucial information. Crime will not be tolerated in our communities, and we will continue working closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our residents.
