Notorious Vehicle Thief Successfully Convicted And Sentenced

Durban police officials have been relentless in ensuring criminals get their day in court, and they’ve done it again! The Durban Cluster Specialist Section has announced the conviction and 10-year direct imprisonment sentencing of notorious motor vehicle thief, Lunga Mthiyane.

Earlier this year on the 26th of February, our Special Operations team assisted Bidtrack and the SAPS in tracking down a Toyota Hilux, that had been stolen from the Morningside area that morning. Members tracked the vehicle to Jan Smuts Highway and managed to bring it to a stop, where Mthiyane was caught red handed in the driver’s seat, promptly arrested and taken into police custody for processing and further investigation. Mthiyane was tracked down and arrested within 20 minutes of stealing the vehicle.

Following due course, the accused was released on bail; however, a repeat offender, Mthiyane was again arrested a few months later by the Durban North Crime Prevention Unit for attempting to steal a VW Polo from Hyper By The Sea. He was also convicted and sentenced for that crime.

Despite interference after the arrest, the impact of Covid, and challenges arising as a result of the July unrest, the case was relentlessly pursued until justice was served.

All roleplayers are excited when joint efforts result in arrests that disrupt the vehicle syndicates operating in Durban.

Special mentions were made for Marshall Security and Bidtrack for the part played in securing the first arrest, W/O Shaun Mcfall and Sgt Brandon Pillay – respectively of the Durban Flying Squad and Prov TRIO Task Team, Brigadier Parumasar, Specialist Prosecutor Surekha Marimuthu, and VCIU-Isipingo.

News of this conviction follows two other recent successes:
