Trio Sentenced To 73.5 Years Following 2018 House Robbery

Gcina Mbhele, Sthembiso Ntsele, and Khanyisani Msomi were arrested in October 2018 by our Special Operations Team members after committing a house robbery on Danville Avenue in the Virginia area.

After further investigations into the case, members of our Special Ops Team and Durban North SAPS Detectives arrested a suspect who dropped off the other four armed suspects to commit the house robbery.

On Tuesday, 14th of March 2023 in the Durban Magistrates Court led by Specialist Prosecutor Surekha Marimuthu assisted by Detective Shezi from Durban North SAPS after countless court dates and proceedings over the last five years we are pleased to announce the following sentences.

Khanyisani Msomi who was the driver of the vehicle who dropped the suspects off was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Gcina Mbhele was found guilty for robbery with aggravating circumstances and for attempted murder which stemmed from a shootout with our Special Ops Team members. Mbhele was also linked to a house robbery which had occurred 4 days prior to his arrest, at a premises in Gemmel Place and subsequently found guilty for robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to a total of 36 years direct imprisonment.

Sthembiso Ntsele was found guilty for robbery with aggravating circumstances, for attempted murder which stemmed from the shootout with our Special Ops Team members, for assault, for reckless and negligent driving, for malicious damage to property and was sentenced to 27,5 years direct imprisonment.

Detective Shezi from Durban North SAPS and Specialist Prosecutor Surekha Marimuthu from the Senior Public Prosecutor must be commended on for their endless dedication and effort to this case.

This successful conviction is a stern warning to criminals that they will face the full might of the law if they get caught.
