On Monday evening members of our Special Operations Team together with the Greenwood Park Crime Prevention Unit, acting on intelligence received, apprehended two suspects wanted for several cases of theft of batteries from Telkom’s Openserve network connectivity boxes around the Greenwood Park and Durban North areas.
With these battery theft incidents on the rise over the past couple weeks, our operations teams and policing authorities had been on high alert. Then with information received on Monday, the suspects’ vehicle was finally spotted travelling on the N2 South freeway.
After a short chase the vehicle was stopped on the M1 Higginson Highway where two suspects, one of which was a foreign national, were arrested. Upon searching the vehicle, two batteries from Telkom’s Openserve network connectivity boxes, together with break-in implements, were found in the vehicle.
Further investigations lead the teams to the Risecliff area, where more stolen batteries and solar panels were recovered. It is unknown at this stage where the batteries and solar panels were stolen from, but it would form part of further police investigations.
Both suspects and stolen items were taken to the Greenwood Park Police station for further processing.
Well done to all role players for working together and on yet another successful arrest.
