Copper Theft Arrest in Westmead Amid Surge in Criminal Activity

This morning, at approximately 08h36, while conducting routine patrols in the Westmead area, GWA’s Marshall Security Officers spotted two suspicious individuals walking along Swanfield Road—one of them carrying a bag and behaving suspiciously.

When approached for questioning, the suspects suddenly fled in opposite directions, abandoning the bag. Officers immediately gave chase, managing to apprehend one suspect on Gillitts Road. Metro Police, who were in the vicinity, assisted in the search for the second suspect alongside our team, but unfortunately, he managed to evade arrest after fleeing into a nearby stormwater drain.

Upon inspection of the abandoned bag, it was found to contain a large quantity of copper.

Metro Police then assisted with transporting the suspect to Pinetown SAPS for further investigation and legal processing.

This latest arrest highlights the effectiveness of high-visibility patrols and rapid tactical response in the fight against opportunistic crime. The Greater Westmead Association (GWA), in collaboration with Marshall Security, Metro Police, and SAPS, continues to play a crucial role in promoting safety, deterring crime, and ensuring that suspects are brought to justice.
