At approximately 18h35 on Friday evening, the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre received information regarding a robbery at a well-known retail centre in the Cornubia area. Two suspects had robbed a member of the public of a cellphone before fleeing the scene in a white VW Polo.
Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team (SOT) immediately began patrolling surrounding areas while monitoring key routes.
At approximately 20h45, members identified the same VW Polo travelling towards Durban Central from Durban North. An interception was attempted; however, the vehicle sped off at high speed, initiating a pursuit.
During the chase, the suspects drove recklessly, skipping multiple red traffic lights and narrowly avoiding collisions with other road users. The vehicle proceeded onto Argyle Road toward the M4 intersection, where it collided with another vehicle.
The suspects’ vehicle came to a stop on the opposite side of the intersection. Members immediately approached and apprehended three male suspects inside the VW Polo.
A search of the suspects resulted in the recovery of multiple cellphones, including the stolen Samsung taken during the earlier robbery. It was then positively established that these were the same individuals involved in the Cornubia incident.
Further inspection revealed that the registration plates were false. The original plates were found concealed beneath the fraudulent plates.
Durban Central SAPS arrived shortly thereafter. The suspects, the vehicle, and all recovered exhibits were transported to Durban Central SAPS for further investigation and processing. The robbery victim opened a case at Durban North SAPS.
It has since been established that the robbery suspects arrested during this operation are linked to multiple common robbery cases across the greater Durban area, including a robbery and murder case that is currently under investigation.
The arrest of these suspects highlights the importance of rapid information sharing, coordinated patrol deployment, and disciplined operational response.
