Yesterday, at approximately 19h30, the GWA Drone Division was conducting routine aerial surveillance in the Westmead area and observed a suspicious vehicle parked along Trafford Road.
Two individuals were seen loading items from nearby bushes into the vehicle. Due to mist in the area, the exact nature of the items could not immediately be identified; however, the behaviour raised suspicion.
The vehicle subsequently departed while the GWA Drone Division maintained aerial observation, while simultaneously coordinating with GWA Marshall Security Tactical Teams and Armed Response Officers.
Through real-time updates, including the vehicle description and live location, responding ground teams located the vehicle on Alexandra Road, where it was brought to a halt and three suspects were apprehended after several metres of municipal electrical copper cables were discovered in the vehicle. The suspects could not provide a reasonable explanation as to how or why they were in possession of the cables.
Pinetown SAPS were contacted, arrived on scene, and transported the suspects, the suspects’ vehicle, and the cables to Pinetown Police Station for further investigation and processing.
Ethekwini Municipality officials and investigators were informed of the successful apprehension.
This Westmead arrest and recovery operation once again highlighted the effectiveness of proactive drone surveillance, coordinated ground response, and real-time intelligence sharing within the Greater Westmead Association precinct.
