Yesterday afternoon a suspect was chased down until he was caught and arrested after stealing a vehicle from the Point area in Durban.
At approximately 16h20 members of our Special Operations Team were activated to assist Tracker SA with locating a stolen Toyota Etios Cross that had been taken from Erkine Terrance in the Point area.
Our Special Ops Team members immediately zoned in on the signal of the stolen vehicle that was pointing to the Briardene and Avoca area, where it was spotted travelling on Queen Nandi Drive. As soon as the suspect noticed our team members and Tracker SA ground team behind him, he accelerated and fled at high speed, racing through red robots with total disregard for other road users.
After a short chase, the suspect was brought to a halt on Queen Nandi Drive where he alighted from the stolen vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Our team members together with the Tracker SA members continued to pursue and managed to apprehend the suspect on Queen Nandi Drive after a short foot chase.
The suspect together with the stolen vehicle was handed over to the SAPS Provincial Vehicle and Trio Task Team who arrived on scene within seconds and transported the suspect together with the stolen vehicle to Point SAPS, where the suspect will be charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
A thank you to the Durban K9 Unit and Phoenix Trio Crimes Unit for also responding to the scene for assistance.
