A coordinated, intelligence-led operation by Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team (SOT), together with other security partners and Richards Bay SAPS, resulted in the arrest of four suspects believed to be linked to a widespread series of common robberies across KwaZulu-Natal.
On Wednesday evening, 21 January, information was received regarding suspects targeting members of the public at a fuel station in Richards Bay. The suspects’ modus operandi involved deliberately bumping into victims, distracting them, and stealing their cellphones before fleeing. Video footage revealed that the suspects arrived in a white hatchback and were actively targeting customers.
While reviewing the footage, members identified the suspects as a group already known for committing similar robberies across multiple areas in KZN. Operational teams immediately mobilised and positioned themselves at strategic locations to intercept the suspects.
Shortly thereafter, further information confirmed that the same group had moved on to a fast-food restaurant in Richards Bay, where additional cellphones were stolen from patrons before the suspects fled.
Later that evening, members spotted a vehicle matching the description travelling on the N2. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects fled at high speed, heading south before exiting toward Umdloti. A coordinated pursuit followed, and members successfully brought the vehicle to a halt.
Four suspects were apprehended at the scene. Officers confirmed that the suspects were wearing the same clothing seen in the earlier video footage. A search of the suspects and the vehicle led to the recovery of multiple cellphones, two of which were positively linked to the robbery at the Richards Bay restaurant.
The suspects and the vehicle were handed over to Richards Bay SAPS for further investigation. Preliminary investigations indicate that this group may be linked to numerous common robbery cases reported in Richards Bay, Umhlali, Verulam, KwaDukuza, Pinetown, Durban North, and surrounding areas.
This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-driven collaboration between private security, specialised investigation units, and SAPS in addressing organised robbery syndicates operating across the province. Investigations are ongoing to formally link the suspects to additional cases.
