A coordinated operation by Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team (SOT) and the Sydenham SAPS Trio Crimes Unit has resulted in the arrest of a suspected vehicle thief, the recovery of a suspect vehicle, and the seizure of vehicle-breaking implements believed to have been used in a series of vehicle thefts.
On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, at approximately 04h30, members of the Marshall Security Special Operations Team were conducting proactive patrols along Clare Road following a recent increase in vehicle thefts within the Sydenham, Mayville, and Morningside areas.
While patrolling, members observed two Volkswagen Polo vehicles travelling together at an extremely high speed along Clare Road towards Quarry Road.
Members immediately began following both vehicles.
During the pursuit, members recognised one of the VW Polos as a vehicle that had previously been linked to a vehicle theft investigation in Valley View Road, Morningside. Having previously reviewed CCTV footage from that investigation, members recognised the VW Polo and formed the suspicion that the VW Polo travelling in front of it was a stolen vehicle.
As members closed in, the first VW Polo suddenly turned into a side street and disappeared from view. The second vehicle continued along Clare Road, prompting members to continue the pursuit.
Upon noticing the responding officers, the suspects accelerated through the Sydenham residential area, driving at extremely high speeds and taking numerous turns in an attempt to evade arrest.
During the pursuit, the suspects lost control of their vehicle, causing it to spin and come to a stop facing the responding officers.
As members exited their vehicle to approach the suspects, the driver suddenly accelerated directly towards them in an apparent attempt to run them over. Officers were forced to jump out of the way to avoid being struck before immediately returning to their vehicle and continuing the pursuit.
The pursuit came to an end when the suspect vehicle crashed near the corner of New Germany Road.
One suspect fled on foot down an embankment towards the river and evaded arrest despite an extensive search. The driver was successfully apprehended at the scene without further incident.
Members of the Sydenham SAPS Trio Crimes Unit took over the scene for further investigation.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of vehicle-breaking implements, including a VW Polo engine computer box, a bolt cutter, a crowbar, a Speedpoint machine, and other equipment commonly associated with vehicle theft.
Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was displaying cloned registration plates. The original registration plates were recovered concealed inside the vehicle.
Investigators also established that the same suspects had stolen the first blue VW Polo from Kensington Flats that members had observed travelling with the suspect vehicle earlier in the pursuit. Unfortunately, as the stolen vehicle was not fitted with a tracking device, it could not be recovered.
The recovered VW Polo, all recovered exhibits, and the arrested suspect were handed over to Sydenham SAPS for further investigation and processing.
It is believed the suspects are linked to a number of vehicle theft incidents that have recently affected the Mayville, Sydenham, and Morningside areas.
