Earlier this afternoon, during routine patrols in the Westmead area, a GWA Marshall Security officer observed a suspicious male walking along Henry Pennington Road carrying a large bag. The man’s unusual behaviour, paired with the weight and appearance of the bag, raised immediate concern.
Upon closer inspection, the individual was found to be in possession of a significant quantity of copper. The now suspect was immediately apprehended.
Following the discovery, Eskom was notified, and members of the Pinetown SAPS swiftly arrived on scene. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning and processing.
The stolen copper cables are suspected to be linked to broader infrastructure crimes that have impacted electrical networks in the region.
This incident underscores the importance of visible patrols and rapid intervention. The presence of GWA Marshall Security’s patrol teams, along with the swift support of SAPS and critical infrastructure partners, continues to play a vital role in protecting our community from crime and ensuring accountability.
The success of this interception highlights the collective impact of the Greater Westmead Association in fostering safety and proactive policing. GWA-supported patrols and communication protocols are instrumental in flagging high-risk behaviours, supporting crime prevention strategies, and creating a safer environment for businesses and residents alike. As criminal trends shift, the value of unity and rapid collaboration — as demonstrated today — remains our strongest defence.
