On the 18 of September at approximately 16h41, the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre received a critical alert from a vigilant Marshall Security Officer regarding a possible theft in progress at a well-known business on Randworth Close in the Red Hill area.
Marshall Security’s Armed Response Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they observed nine suspects behaving suspiciously. Detecting the potential for criminal activity, the officers promptly called for additional support from Greenwood Park SAPS, who arrived swiftly to assist.
A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a large quantity of stolen copper hidden inside one of the trucks. Further investigations led to the discovery of additional copper stashed within a room on the business premises. During the investigation, one of the suspects attempted to bribe our Armed Response Officer with R50 000 in order to turn a blind eye.
Key investigators and stakeholders were called to the scene to identify the stolen copper and other materials, confirming that the items were essential infrastructure materials that had been stolen.
The total value of the recovered copper is estimated at R1.2 million in scrap value, with a combined weight of 7 tons and 290kgs.
All nine suspects were arrested on the spot by Greenwood Park SAPS as they could not provide any reasonable explanation as to how they had the copper in their possession. The stolen copper, along with the truck, was transported to Greenwood Park SAPS for further investigation and processing.
Marshall Security remains dedicated to safeguarding the community and ensuring the security of vital resources. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and rapid response in combating crime.
We commend our Security Officer, Armed Response Officers, SAPS, and all involved for their outstanding efforts in apprehending the suspects and bringing them to justice.
