Yesterday, at approximately 11h43, a Marshall Security Armed Response Officer, while conducting routine patrols along Umgeni Road, observed a suspect carrying a plastic bag and displaying suspicious behaviour.
Our Marshall Security Armed Response Officer approached the individual to conduct further enquiries. During the interview, the suspect was requested to show the contents of the bag, which revealed copper cables. When questioned about their origin, the suspect was unable to provide a clear or legitimate explanation.
The suspect was immediately apprehended.
SAPS were notified and called to the scene. On arrival the suspect was instructed to lead our officers to the location from which the copper cables had been removed. The suspect complied and escorted SAPS and our team to the premises.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect was employed at the property to look after and safeguard the site. The suspect provided contact details for his employer, who confirmed that he was unaware that his employee was removing copper cables from the property.
The employer expressed his intention to proceed with charges. He arrived at the scene shortly after.
The suspect was transported to Durban Central SAPS, where he was formally charged with theft.
