One Killed, Two Injured In Cold-blooded Drive-by Shooting In Umdloti

A man has tragically died, two were injured, and a fourth severely traumatised after their vehicle was fired upon during a drive-by shooting in Umdloti this evening.

Just before 19h00 the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre was inundated with frantic calls, WhatsApp messages on crime alert groups and panic activations from clients calling for help, after reports had come through of a shooting incident on North Beach Road.

Multiple Armed Response Officers and Marshall Special Operations Team members were dispatched and arrived within minutes after receiving the first call, along with Netcare911 paramedics who arrived shortly thereafter.

Upon their arrival they found two male victims who had suffered severe gunshot wounds. One victim had been shot in the head and was declared deceased on scene. The second victim had suffered multiple shots to his body and advanced life support intervention was required. The patient was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital by Netcare911 for further medical care.

Shortly thereafter a further two victims, who had also been seated in the vehicle when the shooting had occurred, returned to the scene after they had fled to safety during the incident. One of them had suffered a gunshot wound to the left arm, and was also stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital for further medical care. The fourth victim was fortunately uninjured, however was very traumatised.

Multiple spent cartridges of a high caliber rifle were found on scene. Although the incident is believed to be taxi-industry related, the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting is still to be confirmed.

The scene was secured by our team members before being handed over to the Durban North SAPS. A case of murder and attempted murder will be investigated.

We would like to thank Netcare911, the Umdloti CPF, Tongaat CPF, CERT and other first responders for their assistance on scene.
