An e-hailing service driver was hijacked of his vehicle after being held up at gunpoint by suspects pretending to need a ride last night.
At approximately 20h20 multiple Armed Response Officers were activated by our Emergency Dispatch Centre to assist Matrix Tracking with a hijacked white Toyota Avanza in the Redhill area.
Armed Response Officers responded to the last known location of the hijacked vehicle and managed to recover the vehicle within 10 minutes from being activated, in conjunction with the Matrix ground team and Metro Police. The vehicle was found abandoned on Legacy Road near the Mallaca Road informal settlement.
It was later established that the driver of the vehicle was an e-hailing service driver, who had been hijacked of his vehicle after being requested by the suspects pretending to require a trip. After the driver collected the suspects from their location in Durban Central, one of them produced a firearm and demanded that the driver stop his vehicle, where after they proceeded to forcefully take it.
The driver was then dropped off on Kenneth Kaunda Road in the Durban North area, from where he eventually managed to find assistance to activate the tracking device in his vehicle.
The scene was secured and will be investigated further by the SAPS. The victim went to Durban Central SAPS to open a case of hijacking.
