Four Suspects Linked to Retail Theft Syndicate Arrested Following CCTV Investigation

An investigation led by the Marshall Security Special Operations Team, working in close partnership with Durban North SAPS, has resulted in the arrest of four suspects believed to be linked to a retail theft syndicate operating across KwaZulu-Natal.

The investigation stemmed from a theft incident that occurred on 27 June 2026 at well-known bottle store in Zimbali,Ballito. Through detailed CCTV analysis, members identified the suspects involved, as well as the vehicle allegedly used during the commission of the offence.

Yesterday, at approximately 15h00, members received information that the same group of suspects had allegedly stolen five bottles of liquor from another well-known bottle store in the Pinetown area before fleeing the scene. CCTV footage obtained from the incident confirmed that the suspects matched those identified during the earlier Zimbali investigation.

Members immediately mobilised and began conducting patrols at shopping centres throughout Durban in an effort to locate the suspects.

At approximately 18h48, while patrolling along Armstrong Avenue, members spotted the identified vehicle travelling from the direction of well-known Shopping Centre in Umhlanga area towards La Lucia area.

Members immediately followed the vehicle. Upon realising they were being followed, the suspects stopped and attempted to flee on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, three suspects were successfully apprehended.

Durban North SAPS arrived on scene shortly thereafter and took over the investigation.

A search of the suspects and their vehicle resulted in the recovery of approximately R18,000 worth of suspected stolen clothing. The suspects were unable to provide proof of purchase or account for the items in their possession. Based on the circumstances, it is believed the clothing had been stolen from several retail stores at well-known Shopping Centre in Umhlanga area.

Further investigation led members to a flat in the Point area, where the suspects admitted to hide up the liquor stolen earlier that day from well-known bottle store in Pinetown. Members successfully recovered the stolen liquor.

While at the flat, members identified and apprehended a fourth suspect who had been captured on CCTV during the theft at a well-known bottle store in Zimbali.

Further enquiries with management at a well-known Shopping Centre in Umhlanga area confirmed that the suspects were linked to multiple theft incidents at various retail stores within the shopping centre. The affected businesses are in the process of opening criminal cases to link the suspects to those offences.

All four suspects, together with the recovered stolen property, were handed over to Durban North SAPS for further investigation and processing.

The investigation has also linked the suspects to additional theft cases in Ballito, Pinetown, and Gauteng, with further investigations continuing.

This operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led investigations, detailed CCTV analysis, and the close working relationship between Marshall Security and SAPS in disrupting organised retail theft syndicates operating across multiple regions.
