Backpack Theft on Umhlanga Promenade

On December 11, 2024, at approximately 13h00, Marshall Security’s Area Manager was patrolling the Umhlanga Promenade when a lifeguard and a young male approached him to report a theft. The young male explained that he and two friends had left their backpack, containing three smartphones and a wallet, behind the lifeguard tower while swimming. Upon returning, they discovered the backpack was missing.

The Area Manager promptly circulated a detailed description of two male suspects based on information received to Marshall Security’s Armed Response Officers, and Security Officers and began a coordinated search.

Within 20 minutes, the suspects were spotted. One suspect was apprehended while the second suspect fled into a nearby resort but was then promptly apprehended a short while later. The ages of the suspects were 14 and 18 years of age.

After investigations the stolen backpack containing the three smartphones and the wallet which was discarded in a nearby bush was recovered.

Despite the successful apprehension and recovery of the stolen items, the victims chose not to open a formal case with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Why Opening a Case Matters:
Opening a case with SAPS is a crucial step in ensuring that justice is served. Without a formal case, suspects cannot be prosecuted, leaving room for continued criminal activity. Reporting incidents and opening cases help hold criminals accountable and contribute to accurate crime statistics, which inform law enforcement’s resource allocation to high-priority areas.

Marshall Security urges all residents and visitors to report crimes and open cases to help combat criminal activity effectively.

Marshall Security remains committed to protecting the community through rapid response, expert monitoring, and collaboration with law enforcement.
