At approximately 19h00 last night the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre was alerted via a community WhatsApp group that an E-hailing driver was robbed of his cellphone.
It was later established that the driver had picked up a client in the Durban area. While on route to the specified address in the Ballito area, the client had requested to be dropped off a road away from their destination. Then as the client got out the vehicle, they snatched the E-hailing driver’s cellphone and fled without paying for the trip.
Upon furthering investigation and working together with other security providers in the area, the suspect was eventually found and apprehended in a residence on Elizabeth Road, Ballito.
The suspect was found with the stolen cellphone in his possession, however the E-hailing driver did not wish to open a case after the suspect returned his cellphone and the suspect’s wife paid for the fare.
On a separate incident earlier this weekend, an E-hailing driver fell victim to an attempted hijacking on Friday morning.
The incident occurred on Manilla Place in Umgeni Park where the driver was approached by three armed suspects who attempted to hijack him of his white VW Polo. The driver resisted and managed to deter the hijackers; however, the vehicle was unfortunately damaged during the incident.
The suspects fled on foot into a nearby informal settlement. A search was conducted for the wanted suspects who unfortunately evaded arrest.
