This morning just before 11h00 the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre received reports of a shooting incident which had occurred on the Umhlanga Pier.
Multiple Armed Response Officers and Members of our Special Operations Team were dispatched to the scene to investigate and arrived within minutes.
As our team arrived, a 36-year-old man was being treated by paramedics from Netcare 911 and Medi Response after he had sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Upon further investigation it was established that there had been an altercation between two men, who were known to each other. During the disagreement, one of the men drew his own personal licensed firearm and shot the other. The gunman, who was still on scene when members arrived, was interviewed by members of our Special Ops Team where he was disarmed and kept aside for the arrival of the Durban North SAPS.
The crime scene was cordoned off by our members, where a 9mm spent cartridge was found, until the Durban North SAPS arrived. The gunman together with his firearm was handed over to them.
The gunshot victim was unfortunately declared deceased by paramedics. The Durban North SAPS will be investigating further.
