At approximately 07h19, the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre received information via a WhatsApp Crime Alert group regarding a suspect breaking into a property along Smiso Nkwanyana Road, Morningside.
Although the property was monitored by another security provider, Marshall Security Armed Response Officers immediately responded to investigate and assist.
Upon arrival, officers established that the suspect had allegedly removed an undisclosed quantity of copper piping from a wall before being interrupted. The suspect abandoned the piping and fled the scene.
Armed with a description of the suspect, officers conducted proactive patrols along surrounding roads in an attempt to locate him.
While patrolling Riverview Road, an officer spotted an individual matching the description provided, carrying several items. Upon noticing the officer, the suspect attempted to flee. However, following a brief foot chase, the officer successfully apprehended him.
The suspect was found in possession of two camping chairs, a portable single-burner gas stove and a Weber braai stand. Further investigation established that the items had allegedly been stolen from two separate properties along Riverview Road.
The respective homeowners were contacted and confirmed that the recovered items belonged to them. One homeowner confirmed that the camping chairs and portable gas stove had been taken from a Wendy house, while another confirmed that the Weber braai stand had been stolen from their premises.
Members of Berea SAPS subsequently attended the scene and took the suspect into custody for further investigation and processing.
Marshall Security commends the community members who shared the initial information through the WhatsApp Crime Alert group, as well as the determination of the Armed Response Officers whose proactive patrols resulted in the suspect’s apprehension and the recovery of stolen property.
Importantly, the initial incident occurred at a property monitored by another security provider. Marshall Security’s officers nevertheless responded and assisted, demonstrating our commitment to protecting the wider community and taking action where assistance is needed, regardless of client status.
