Members of the Marshall Security Special Operations Team (SOT), working in coordination with Crime Intelligence and Umlazi SAPS, successfully apprehended a suspect linked to a vehicle theft syndicate operating across multiple areas in KwaZulu-Natal.
On 13 May 2026, members received intelligence regarding a group of suspects involved in theft of motor vehicle incidents operating in a white Toyota Corolla Hatchback. The suspects were believed to be linked to numerous vehicle theft incidents in the Chatsworth, Westville, Hillcrest, and Malvern areas.
Information received indicated that the suspects would be operating during the late afternoon, and members immediately mobilised to strategic areas to monitor for the vehicle.
While conducting patrols, further information was received that the same suspects had attempted to steal a red Volkswagen Polo in Chatsworth but were disturbed and fled the scene. A case was subsequently opened at Chatsworth SAPS.
At approximately 19h30, additional intelligence indicated that the suspects had attempted to steal a Toyota Fortuner on Mountview Road in Chatsworth.
Members then proceeded toward Umlazi and positioned themselves strategically along possible escape routes. At approximately 20h00, members observed the wanted white Toyota Corolla at the intersection of the Umlazi Off-Ramp and the R102.
Upon noticing the presence of members, the suspects sped off at high speed toward Umlazi, prompting an immediate pursuit.
As the suspects approached a bend before entering Umlazi, they lost control of the vehicle and collided with a silver Renault driven by a member of the public. The Renault subsequently went over the bridge and down an embankment.
The suspects’ vehicle came to a stop, and four suspects fled on foot. Members immediately gave chase, and after a brief foot pursuit, one suspect was successfully apprehended. The remaining suspects managed to flee into dense vegetation.
A search of the suspects’ vehicle led to the recovery of various car-breaking implements, vehicle theft computer boxes, electronic devices, and a set of false registration plates.
Further investigation revealed that the registration plates displayed on the Toyota Corolla were false. A VIN inspection confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen under a Westville SAPS case earlier this year after being stolen in the Westville area.
Members also attended to the driver of the Renault, who fortunately sustained only minor injuries.
SAPS took control of the scene shortly thereafter. The arrested suspect, together with the recovered stolen vehicle and all exhibits, was handed over to Umlazi SAPS for further investigation and processing.
This coordinated operation highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing, proactive patrols, and rapid response in disrupting organised vehicle theft syndicates operating across the province.
